Doing a bit of email clean up and thought would be of interest to start posting comments here.

I have been burning round (up and down steep hills) on my new elation ebike kit and I am… well how could you describe it … ELATED!!

Excellent performance all round. Where I live is perfect for your system as it is so hilly here. Looking forward to riding myself rich with fuel savings!!

Regards

I have an eLation 200w conversion on my Malvern Star Alcova. The bike and the eBike conversion are great. I ride about 100km each week and use the bicycle for my personal transport, shopping and recreation.

Prior to this bike and conversion I had a GIANT city bike with a 180w Cyclone kit. I consider myself to be well informed about eBikes and have a keen interest in this form of transport. My principal needs were to cope with hills and extend my endurance when riding.

Before purchase, I undertook a lot of research into the eBike options available in Sydney. My decision was to install a 200w eLation conversion on a new Malvern Star hybrid bicycle. The bike conversion was carried out at Concord Sports Store. I received fantastic service and a very professionally fitted conversion. I can recommend this eBike conversion to anyone who is a competent rider and has a sound bicycle. You’ll be sold once you have a test drive.

The battery life is excellent when using the motor for assistance with hills, wind and additional acceleration. The addition weight added to the bike is more than offset by the performance gain. The eLation system uses a chain drive and freewheel implementation that adds substantially to the riders performance and overall satisfaction. The eLation electric bike conversion is a high quality Australian product that provides an outstanding eBike implementation.

My previous implementation of the GIANT & Cyclone was constant trouble and disappointing, despite the potential I could see with eBikes.Elation solved all.

Cheers,

"After using the elation bike on an avanti discovery hybrid for six months I can verify that it's a fantastic invention.  My girlfriend loves it and goes up the Blue Mountain's hills which would be unrideable for her.  She does this approximately three times faster than I can pedal.  Julie says she would never ride another bike unless it has an elation motor.  I recommend the elation bike system and am saving up for another one (for Julie).  I have lots of friends who are interested.  If I order 3 or 4 at once what sort of discount would we be looking at?"

To Allan and the elation Team,

I received my e bike in January 2008 and have travelled well over 2000 kms in the past year or so.  I use the bike to travel to and from work (20 kms round trip), I have found the elation bike to be fabulous.  The 10 kilometres to work is basically downhill, meaning that getting home would be a real pain without the motor on the bike.

The great thing is that I can decide how much exercise I want on any day and the elation responds accordingly.  Having the gears fully integrated with the motor and the twist grip is the biggest advantage of the elation system as far as I am concerned.

The elation has been incredibly reliable and I definitely believe I would not have kept on riding to work without it.

Good luck and best wishes with your future developments.

Here is a snippet from a posting on the Endless Sphere Forum:

Question that was posed:

"If you previously owned a cyclone, would be interesting to hear your comparison between cyclone and elation. My view is that the elation has a far nicer motor attaching arrangement, the heart of the elation system is the crank set up, as well as being a beautiful looking piece of engineering".

The response:

"The eLation system is superior in a number of ways. Having the full range of gears leaves your bike to perform as it was designed. Elation's crank system delivers a more efficient system and I agree that it is far more elegant. The mounting and design is more robust. Component parts are of higher quality and deliver better performance. Having said all that, I think the Cyclone does what its sets out to do. It's a simple drive assist using the chain. The motor is robust and reliable.

My problem was with the battery. I did almost 4000km on my Cyclone system and IF I could have found a reliable supplier close to home for a battery replacement I may have just upgraded the battery.

Having now installed an eLation kit on a new bike - there is no comparison and it's not a fair test of the Cyclone kit to do so.

When I looked at paying almost $800 for a LiFePO4 battery for an old system, I considered it was better economy to do a full upgrade to a new system. This is what I did and I'm very happy.

I did a fair bit of research and I came down on the side of the eLation kit. I'm glad that I did its was an excellent choice."

To the Elation crew,

I have always enjoyed riding my diamond back MTB for pleasure. I moved to the country 3 years ago and found everywhere I go from home I am confronted with steep hills, so with that and the fact that I am not as young and fit anymore, the bike stayed in the shed, unless I transported it somewhere on the back of the car.

Over a year ago, I stumbled onto the elation site, purchased and fitted your kit and never looked back, the bike gets used as much as time permits.

I can now conquer all hills, just like riding on the flat, I sometimes ride 5 km up a mountain with an average 12% grade, something I would never contemplate without your electric assist kit.

I should also thank you for your excellent after sales support and back up.

Thanking you.

Electric Bicycle! Has anyone had experience with the new (V2) Elation ebike kit ?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

I have had little exposure to this kit. Maybe some of my ramblings might be of some help.

The part of the kit that I am most interested in is the freewheeling chain rings (front cogs). Version 2 looks a bit more refined and durable. This is the clever part of the kit that allows the chain rings to be driven by the motor even if the rider isn't pedaling (all gears available.) This part is bound to be useful in some other projects. (only square taper though ??? )

The motor drive also freewheels allowing the bike to be ridden normally with the motor switched off. (minimal extra effort)

The other main change for version 2 is the use of an improved brushless motor. It looks suspiciously similar to the one that cyclone supply in their kits. If so, then this should prove to be a positive. The cyclone motor has a particularly good reputation.

LiFePO4 batteries are a sensible choice in terms of recharge life weight and performance. I have some experience with various battery types and these would be my choice for this application.

My only criticism of the kit is it is probably a little too good. Electric bicycles are the way, quite a few people are introduced to cycling. Fortunately most electric bikes have terrible range and speed. Many moderately trained cyclists can give an electric bike a run for its money in terms of speed and blow them to the weeds for range.

It may be a bit more difficult to entice someone using this kit, to give up the assistance and start riding a standard bike.

Dear Allan,

Just to report back after 2 years of Elation cycling, I'm finding the Apollo Elation bike continues to work well and is ideally suited to my commuting needs.  I have a mostly down-hill run in the morning and need to climb back 90 metres  or so slope in the evening.  The machine is also ideal for my daily distance travelled of around 15 km, I can go for 2 days between battery charging.

All the best for New Year and continued developments,

 Mike (Wellington, New Zealand)
